With the Easter long weekend quickly approaching, it’s time to get the wine rack full again. Price and quality are usally the 2 main factors which will affect your decision making process. Here are some great value buys to check out.

Castillo de Monseran, Garnacha, Spain, under $12. Soft drinking with great red fruit. Love this wine in the summer as well.

Avelada, Vinho Verde, Portugal, under$11. A little frizante on the tongue and some fresh cut grass. Great brunch wine.

Cono Sur, Viognier, Chile, under $12. The tropical friuts keep me coming back to this wine. These guys are pioneering with some great organic practices as well. Finger on the pulse here.

Finca Flichman, Malbec, Argentina, under $13. This varietal is catching some steam over the past 18 months with the downtown crowd. A lighter style of malbec but lovely friut.

KWV, Chenin Blanc, S. Africa, under $12. Love the floral and hay nose, great with most dishes. A well respected producer from South Africa.

Hope these ideas help you along. Come back again for my Top 5 In-law Wines for the long weekends. Impress his or hers parents with these modest gems that won’t break the bank . Would they even appreciate if it was expensive?

Cheers!

I attended the inaugural Fine Vintage Wine Club wine tasting last night at UBC Downtown Robson Square. There were well over a half dozen tasting stations with a variety of regions represented. Highlights for me was meeting Road 13 Wine Maker Michael Bartier. He brought some of the yet to be bottled 2008Road 13 Riesling, straight form the barrel. It was obviously young but very fresh with great acidity. Looking forward to that release. Michael was also pouring their Chardonnay which was tasting very well and a hit with my wife Keilah who is on a buttery Chardonnay kick recently. In the red tasting room they were pouring their Jackpot Series Pinot Noir http://www.road13vineyards.com/our_wines_jackpot_pinot.php and Syrah http://www.road13vineyards.com/our_wines_jackpot_syrah.php. The Pinot was fabulous and I like the price point. The Syrah was nice but needed some food and possibly a bit more age but is worth picking up. Other highlights were a table of Bordeaux’s under $25 my favorite was the Chateau Argadens 2005, great food wine for the price point. There were a good selection of German Wines as well.

The fine Vintage Wine club is casual with a relaxed atmosphere and we enjoyed chatting with some acquaintances we had met during our WSET training. I would recommend this group to anyone looking to any wine enthusiasts in Vancouver. More information can be found here http://www.finevintageltd.com/Wine-Club/
